FULL X RUN MAP

T2 WATERHEAD - ELTRERWATER - T2A DUNGEON GHYLL (VALLEY CHECKPOINT)

Run starts from Transition 2 at Waterhead Ambleside contouring the head of Windermere Lake on pavements and minor roads to Skelwith Bridge, where it joins the 'Cumbria Way' footpath. The well made, undulating footpath follows the river Brathay to Elterwater and West up the Great Langdale valley to the foothills of the famous Langdale Pikes. Competitors must reach the checkpoint before the times listed in the RACE MANUAL

T2A DUNGEON GHYLL - ROSSET PIKE - ESK HAUSE (MOUNTAIN CHECKPOINT)

From the Feed Station at the head of the valley the run becomes more mountainous as it leaves the 'Cumbria Way' and continues west up Mickelden and onto Rossett Gill. The steep rocky switchbacks ascending Rossett Pike are a rude reminder of the severity of this run after the relative ease of the previous valley section. From the summit of Rossett Pike a short undulating grassy upland run past Angle Tarn to the mountain checkpoint at Esk Hause. Competitors must make the checkpoint before the cut off times listed in the RACE MANUAL.

ESK HAUSE - GREAT END - SCAFELL PIKE

Great End and Broad Crag loom ahead, hiding the ultimate peak of Scafell Pike. The final ascent from Calf Cove onto Broad Crag and across to Scafell Summit is rough going, loose rocks, large boulders and often low visibility make this section of the run the most challenging. Fully qualified Mountain Marshals are on hand to show you the route and offer support throughout this section of the run. It is strongly advised that a pre race inspection of the mountain section is undertaken by all competitors.

SCAFELL PIKE - ESK HAUSE - DUNGEON GHYLL - WATERHEAD

Once on the summit of Scafell Pike, runners retrace their steps back to the finish at Waterhead Ambleside. Extra care is needed on the Scafell Pike to Esk Hause via Broad Crag section and on the descent of Rossett Gill. Once at the Feed Station in the Langdale Valley you are checked back by the marshalls and continue via the 'Cumbria Way' home to the race HQ at Waterhead Ambleside.
